Job Title: Business Development Associate

Position Overview

Hoffmann Architects + Engineers is searching for an entry to mid-level sales/business development professional with 2 or more years of relevant work experience to join our team in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia. With opportunities to participate in all stages of the sales cycle, the Business Development Associate works closely with the Director of Business Development and Office Manager for the Virginia office to identify, develop, and close new business. This position partners with staff company-wide including: local project staff to monitor opportunities for additional business with existing clients; business development staff in the other offices to increase opportunities and to identify prospects with multiple locations; and marketing staff to work on proposal and qualification packages. With offices in CT, NY, and VA, Hoffmann is an award-winning specialty architectural and engineering firm that has built a reputation for excellence by resolving building exterior distress at major symbols of the country’s architectural heritage, such as the Chrysler Building, the United States Capitol building, the New York Stock Exchange, and the Smithsonian Institution.

Primary Responsibilities

        Identify, develop, and CLOSE new business:

  • Assist with the development and implementation of a business development plan including identification of target market sectors and potential clients;
  • Assist with qualifying and pursuing new business based on potential revenue, profit, and timely close;
  • Identify decision makers within prospective client organizations and establish meaningful contact through cold calling, emails, social networking, and meetings;
  • Partner with project staff to monitor opportunities for additional business with existing clients;
  • Research and participate in business/social/professional organizations and events, including tradeshows, that promote or generate business relationships;
  • Accompany project staff to meet with qualified prospects to present the firm's credentials and/or identify and discuss specific opportunities for future work;
  • Participate in the development of winning technical and fee proposals;
  • Participate in the development of winning qualifications packages, email campaigns, presentations, and introductory credentials packages with marketing staff.

        Document/quantify results of business development activities:

  • Effectively organize and track leads;
  • Participate in regular business development meetings and coordinate activity with business development and marketing professionals in the other offices;
  • Submit weekly business development activity log to Director of Business Development, Office Manager, and Executive Chairman of firm.

        Partner with marketing staff to:

  • Coordinate with consultants for proposal and qualification information;
  • Maintain contacts database.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree AND
  • Minimum 2 years of sales/business development experience; OR
  • Equivalent combination of academic and professional experience.

Required Qualifications

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel);
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Be self-motivated and take initiative;
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage workloads to meet deadlines;
  • Must be willing to climb ladders and walk on roofs of low and high-rise buildings;
  • Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proven success in identifying and landing new business in the public and private sectors;
  • Knowledge of design and construction industry;
  • Demonstrated experience selling professional services;
  • Knowledge of Adobe Suite (InDesign and Photoshop) is a plus.

The Business Development and Marketing Team

The Business Development Associate works closely with the business development and marketing staff throughout the firm, as well as with the office manager and project staff in his/her/their respective office.

Maureen Dobbins, Vice President and Director of Business Development

The Business Development professional for each office reports directly to Maureen, who is responsible for managing all business development and marketing activities. Based at the firm's Connecticut headquarters, Maureen oversees sales, business development, public relations, and marketing initiatives company-wide, across all three offices. Under her leadership, the business development and marketing team establishes connections, develops project strategies, explores new markets, and maintains active participation in industry organizations. With over 30 years of experience in the architecture and engineering industry, Maureen applies a results-driven approach to winning new business and maintaining client relationships.
